 In pulse oximetry, doctors make use of the changed coloration of the blood pigment.  The saturated blood, in particular, which contains a lot of oxygen, appears bright red.  Unsaturated blood, for example from the veins, contains less O2.  This makes it look dark red to bluish.  It primarily absorbs light from the infrared range.  In contrast, the bright red blood mainly absorbs red light.  For this reason, a light source is used in the method.

 It emits light with a wavelength of 660 nanometers.  The infrared light has a wavelength of 940 nanometers.  The second part of the pulse oximeter is behind the part of the body where the doctors take the measurement.  As a rule, they place the device on the earlobe or index finger.  Now this measures how much light gets through the device.  A computer uses the resulting value to determine the actual oxygen saturation of the blood.
